Systemschriften

»Systemschriften« ist in der IT und Typografie eine Bezeichnung für Screen Fonts (Bildschirmschriften), die ein Betriebssystem (OS Operating Systems, z.B. Microsoft Windows ® oder Apple macOS ®) eines Mikrocomputers (PC, Smartphone, Tablet, Watch etc.) sowie dessen Anwendersoftware (z.B. Textverarbeitungsprogramme, Web Browser oder E-Mail Clients) im Rahmen der visuell basierenden Benutzerkommunikation (z.B. über LCD-Monitore, Multi-Touch Displays oder sonstige optische Interfaces) benötigt. Auch als Systemschriftarten, System Fonts oder Interface Fonts bezeichnet.

Systemschriften werden in der Regel bei der Erstinstallation und bei Updates (Softwareaktualisierungen) des Betriebssystems durch den jeweiligen Hersteller (z.B. Apple ®, Microsoft ® oder Google ®) auf dem Startvolumen oder einem Primärspeichermedium (z.B. eine Festplatte) installiert.

Primäre Systemschriften

Systemschriften lassen sich in Primär- und Sekundärsystemschriften abgrenzen, wobei die Primärsystemschriften als Mindestanforderung für ein Betriebssystem bzw. die bereitgestellte Software benötigt werden. Im Zuge der globalen Kommunikation zählen auch Nichtrömische Schriften und Zeichen zu den Systemschriften. Welche Screen Fonts zu den primären und sekundären Systemschriften zählen, hängt vom jeweiligen Betriebssystem und der jeweiligen OS-Version ab.

Beispielsweise änderte Apple ® seinen primären System Font »Lucida Grande« von Charles Bigelow (* 1945) und Kris Holmes (* 1950) über die »Helvetica« von Max Miedinger (1910-1980) hin zur »San Francisco« (SF Pro, SF Compact und SF Mono), ¹⁾ einer selbst entwickelten serifenlosen Schriftart für alle Apple-Geräte, die insbesondere für die Lesbarkeit auf kleinen Bildschirmen (z.B. iPhone ® oder Apple Watch ®) bei kleinen Schriftgraden optimiert wurde. Der Font San Francisco ist allerdings ausschließlich für registrierte Entwickler von Drittanbietern für die Entwicklung von Anwendungen der Betriebssysteme iOS, iPadOS, macOS und tvOS lizenziert. ²⁾

Das Pendant zu Apples »San Francisco« ist die »Segoe UI Variable« von Microsoft ®, ³⁾ ein Variabler Font, der den System Font »Tahoma« von Matthew Carter (*1937) bzw. den Vorgänger, die »Arial« von Robin Nicholas (*1947) und Patricia Saunders (1933–2019), abgelöst hat.

Primäre Systemfonts können oder sollten nicht gelöscht oder geändert werden, da sie von von der gesamten Softwarearchitektur benötigt werden. So ist beispielsweise die San Francisco von Apple ® (SF Pro, SF Compact und SF Mono) nur für Entwickler gedacht, nicht für den User. Deshalb ist dieser Primärsystemfont auch nicht in der Schriftensammlung für den User sichtbar.

Sekundäre Systemschriften

Sekundäre Systemschriften sind im Wesentlichen eine Art »Dreingabe« des Herstellers, die eine unkomplizierte Textkommunikation mit einem Mikrocomputer ermöglichen soll. Sie dienen primär der visuellen Text- und Bürokommunikation über eine Anwendersoftware, z.B. für das Schreiben eines Briefes in Microsoft Word ® oder Apple Pages ®, dem Betrachten einer Website in einem Internet-Browser (Clients, z.B. Safari ®, Chrome ® oder Firefox ® etc.) oder für Präsentationen mittels Microsoft PowerPoint ® oder Apple Keynote ®.

Systemschriften in gewerblichen Hauptdruckverfahren

Systemschriften sind in der Regel OpenType TrueType flavoured Fonts (*.ttf) und eignen sich deshalb nicht für die professionelle Weiterverarbeitung im grafischen Gewerbe, da sie keine PostScript-Informationen enthalten. Der Ausdruck von Systemschriften auf Bürodruckern ist möglich, jedoch ist die Qualität des Druckbildes vom korrespondierenden PostScript File des Druckers abhängig. Fehlt ein File für eine bestimmte Systemschrift, wird das Schriftbild simuliert.

Für grafische Druckverfahren bzw. für die professionelle Weiterverarbeitung im grafischen Gewerbe, z.B. durch CTP-Druckplattenbelichter (Computer to Plate) in der Druckvorstufe, sowie für den typometrisch korrekten Ausdruck, z.B. auf einem postscriptfähigen Laserdrucker, sind ausschließlich nur OpenType PostScript flavoured Fonts (*.otf) ⁴⁾  geeignet.

Systemschriften als HTML- und Fallback Fonts

Gewisse Sekundärsystemschriften werden bevorzugt auch als HTML Fonts sowie Fallback Fonts zur Absicherung von Webfonts für Webanwendungen verwendet, da diese mehrheitlich auf den meisten Mikrocomputern installiert sind.

Beispiel einer Fallback Font Anwendung in einem CSS: ⁵⁾

Zu den mehr oder weniger websicheren Fonts (Fallback Fonts) bzw. platformunabhängigen sekundären Systemschriften lateinischen Ursprungs zählen folgende Schriften (macOS und Windows 11, Stand 7.2024) ⁶⁾

Statische und variable Systemschriften

2016 wurde eine gemeinsame Initiative von Adobe ®, Apple ®, Google ® und Microsoft® vorgestellt, zukünftig »Variable Fonts« in einer neuen Version der OpenType Specification ab 1.8 nutzbar zu machen. Variable Fonts werden sich somit als zukünftiger Standard bei Systemschriften – und somit in der digitalen Netzwerktypografie (z.B. bei Websites oder in Mobil Apps) – etablieren.
